The Riviera del Sol hotel is a great base to start exploring the myriad of attractions that the Caribbean paradise of Playa del Carmen has to offer. Our team of knowledgeable staff and concierge are always on hand to assist our guests in getting the most out of their Mayan Riviera vacation.
THE RIVIERA MAYA
Located along the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula between the cities of Cancun and Tulum, the Riviera Maya boasts more than 74 miles of beautiful white sandy beaches, lapped by the Mexican Caribbean which maintains a constant year-round temperature of 84.2 F (around 29 degrees C).
We are one of most centrally located Playa del Carmen hotels and are ideally placed for exploring the fascinating culture and history of the Mayan civilisation that can be traced back over three thousand years. The famous archaeological ruins and mysterious pyramids of Chichen Itza, Tulum, Uxmal, Cob and Tikal are all within easy reach to make the most of your Playa del Carmen vacation. Above all, the Riviera Maya is a destination that has something for everyone. It’s a riot of colour and adventure with a huge variety of activities such as world-class scuba diving, hiking in the jungle, golf, tennis, horseback riding or simply relaxing on the beach or kicking back at our boutique hotel.
ABOUT PLAYA
Playa del Carmen, or “Playa” as it is known by locals and returning visitors, has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in Mexico. Those who travel to Playa often prefer it to the more urban-charged city of Cancun and although it’s no longer a small fishing village, it has evolved into a stylish and diverse resort ensuring that a Playa del Carmen vacation offers something for every visitor.
It’s fashionable yet laid-back, hip but not achingly trendy, family focused but great for couples and an increasingly popular choice for weddings on the Mayan Riviera. The centre of activities revolves around 5th Avenue, just two blocks from the beach and one block from the Riviera del Sol hotel - the ideal spot for a Playa del Carmen vacation.
The majority of the streets are designed with pedestrian walkways, lending the resort a special and relaxed ambience. It’s Mexican café culture at its best, with plenty of top quality restaurants and shops to please even the most discerning holidaymaker. All this is just a few minutes stroll from the Riviera del Sol, making us one of best located Playa del Carmen hotels for both action and relaxation.
SCUBA DIVING
The Mexican Caribbean is one of the world’s most famous places for scuba diving and the Riviera del Sol hotel staff can advise guests on the best dive sites as well as arrange tuition for beginners. The warm, turquoise water of Playa del Carmen shelters a huge variety of sea life in its reef. Both snorkellers and divers will marvel at the diverse range of colourful coral formations. In these calm waters, besides huge families of tropical fish, you will also spot turtles, rays, morays and shads.
THE BEACHES
The Playa del Carmen beach is just a short stroll from the hotel and all of our guests benefit from a free beach pass to Mamitas Beach club. Sun beds, parasols, a full service restaurant and a beach bar are just some of the facilities on offer. There’s even a resident DJ, a pool, dressing room and showers to freshen up. Visitors can also explore other beach areas such as Puerto Morelos, Paamul, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum to name but a few.
CENOTES
The Cenotes or tzonot as the Mayans named them, are a true natural wonder. They are deep sinkholes of crystal clear fresh water with a constant temperature of around 78 F. These fresh water underground caverns and pools were sacred places for the Maya as they represented the mystical entrance to the underworld. The stalactites and stalagmites beneath these clear waters are true natural works of art and are ideal for exploring with a snorkel or scuba equipment, ideally with an experienced guide. Our knowledgeable staff at the Riviera del Sol can advise on the best sites to visit to ensure you get the most from your Playa del Carmen vacation.
TULUM
The town of Tulum offers the perfect combination of ruined Mayan temples and sites of archaeological interest and laid back beach life. The temple architecture is similar but on a smaller scale to Chichen Itza. There are countless attractions yet it retains a air of relaxed tranquillity perfect for couples or families. Tulum is also characterised for being a place dedicated to conservation and eco-tourism. Your Playa del Carmen travel plans should include Tulum as a “must see” experience.
GOLF
The Mexican Caribbean is one of the fastest growing golf destinations in the world with 12 championship courses currently open for play and others under development. The incredible terrain and flora fauna that the region has to offer has attracted the world’s top course designers including: Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price, Robert Trent Jones II, Robert Von Hagge, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Fazio to name a few.
